Early Life and Education
Scott was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He played soccer, football, and baseball during his early school years, excelling in baseball and soccer. After graduating from Brookhaven College in 1997 with an associate degree in psychology, he attended Texas Wesleyan University on a full soccer scholarship. He graduated from The University of North Texas in 1998 with a degree in sociology and an emphasis in psychology.
Scott attended graduate school at Dallas Theological Seminary where he completed master's degrees in theology and psychology in 2000 and 2002. Graduating with a 3.6 GPA, he enrolled in the Ph.D. program at Santa Barbara Graduate Institute, studying clinical psychology with an emphasis in somatic psychology. He also studied clinical psychology as a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of San Diego, where he specialized in sports psychology.
Scott has been teaching and championing fitness-as-a-lifestyle for 15 years. Drawing on his education and experience in athletics, fitness, psychology, nutrition, and bodywork, he has branded his own dynamic approach to health, wellness, and personal training: one that holistically integrates body, mind, and spirit by combining acute mental training with demanding but enjoyable physical exercise and memorable cultural outings.
Growing up in Dallas, Scott excelled in soccer, eventually attending Texas Wesleyan on a full soccer scholarship. While in college, Scott was recruited to play professionally. From 1994 to 2001, Scott played for four pro teams: the Texas Toros, Dallas Burn, Dallas Sidekicks, and Texas Lightning.
Scott has coached boys and girls teams for the Dallas Comets Soccer Club and the Santa Barbara Soccer Club. Helping young players hone their skills and get into top college programs on scholarships was a special experience for Scott, and he went on to get his International Premier Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as well as a National "A" License from the United States Soccer Federation.
Personal Training Career
Scott began his career in personal training in 2002 at Trophy Fitness in Dallas, Texas. In 2005, Scott moved to California and a full-time position at 24 Hour Fitness in Santa Barbara, before moving to Spectrum Health Club in 2007 as a master/elite trainer. Scott served as Fitness Coordinator for post-op patients at the Santa Barbara Plastic Surgery Center during this time, as well as an ambassador for Lululemon Athletica community-outreach athletic programs. In 2007, Scott was also hired as BACARA Resort and Spa's Wellness Choreographer for Destination Transformation, a customizable long-stay wellness program for resort VIP guests. In 2008, Scott moved to Platinum Fitness in Montecito/Summerland, working as a functional trainer alongside Peter Park (Lance Armstrong's trainer). Scott also worked as a mind-body specialist at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa during this time.
In 2010, to expand his fitness footprint into the Los Angeles area, Scott began working at The Sports Club/LA as a private trainer and Pilates instructor at their flagship location in West LA. Scott would also join the West Hollywood Spa team in Sunset Plaza and Beverly Hills locations of Equinox.
SOMA Get Fit and The Lifestyle
To advance his philosophy and approach to wellness and training, Scott founded SOMA Get Fit in Santa Barbara in 2007. SOMA Get Fit provides custom-tailored, goal-specified, integrated training, holistically combined with mental-wellness consulting, Pilates training, yoga, nutrition education, outdoor activities, and bodywork – all in single sessions. Suited to all ages and fitness levels, Scott's customized SOMA programs begin with in-depth health/fitness evaluations and might include beach and mountain training, hiking, sport-specific training, horseback riding, overnight to week-long retreats, and life-coaching services.
Scott has hosted SOMA Retreats for a number of high-end, high-visibility clients: among these are Michelle Williams, Kelsey Grammar, Jackie Sandler, Princess of Monaco Charlene Wittstock, Anna Muganda Ballali (Tanzanian royal family), Clive Davis, Katharina Damm, Rashida Jones, Michael Jordan, Avery Johnson, Daphnee Guinness (heir of Guinness Beer), Billy Baldwin, Dallas Clark, Calvin Klein, Yvette Prieto, Janice Dickinson, Katy Perry, Liberty Ross, John Sykes, Cheyenne Gerardi, Priyanka Chopra, Rick Warren, Tracy Wyle, Kate Somerville, Andrew Weir, and Sandy Lam. SOMA Get Fit has been featured in several regional and national publications, including Marie Claire, Sunset, Angeleno, Santa Barbara Visitor's Magazine, Alaska Air Magazine, and The Hollywood Reporter. Scott has expressed interest in franchising the SOMA Get Fit brand.
In 2011, Scott partnered with the exclusive La Prairie Switzerland Spas at The Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Bel-Air, members of the Dorchester Collection brand of luxury hotels, where he instituted a wellness retreat program called The Lifestyle by Scott Crawford. The Lifestyle is a customizable wellness package intended to train and heal the body, teach and calm the mind, rejuvenate and center the spirit. These customized fitness packages range from hour-long to day-long sessions and might include freshly prepared organic meals, physical movement sessions, transportation to selected cultural activities, spa treatments, acupuncture, horseback riding, an acting class, and/or further fitness classes.
The Lifestyle has garnered praise in websites and magazines like Urban Daddy, The Hollywood Reporter, Examine3, Prestige Magazine, Angeleno, Foam Magazine, The Sunday Times Style Magazine, Elite Traveler, Travel Video New9, Vital Juice, and The Independent. According to Britain's Independent, Scott is "part personal trainer, part life coach and concierge," and "his programmes incorporate everything from hiking to acting classes." A Hollywood Reporter article muses, "It seems safe to say that The Lifestyle by Scott Crawford...has the only workout that includes shopping or a trip to the museum. Crawford's program features cultural excursions alongside physical exercises and spiritual activities like meditation, which Crawford has organized into half- and full-day wellness retreats." And The Sunday Times Style Magazine gushes that The Lifestyle "allows guests to create a flexible timetable from a 'sky's the limit' list of classes, spa treatments and activities... The level of personalized TLC is like being wrapped in a luxurious comfort blanket." Scott is happy to report that The Beverly Hills Hotel purchased The Lifestyle program in 2013.
